beauty for ashes

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.
A day to purge ourselves of self-indulgent pursuits and to remind us of the hope we have for tomorrow.

beauty for ashes
strength for fear
gladness for mourning
peace for despair

Dying for something is easy because it is associated with glory.
Living for something is the hard thing.
Living for something extends beyond fashion, glory, or recognition.
We live for what we believe.

ps . . .
All of you who sent beautiful words of encouragement my way over the past few days?
You are each amazing and make me thankful for the ability to string a few words into a sentence.
Love you guys.

  1. Hi!
This is the first time i comment on your blog but i've been reading all about your adventures for a while (and all the way from Portugal)!
Just want to say you write beautifully! Whatever the subject, you always make it interesting!

  2. i love seeing everyone walk around nyc with their ashes. hope all is well - miss you. and will drop a line soon.

  3. I just love the way you write. Whether it's about Ash Wednesday, a trip you take, or a candle you got at the Target in Harlem, it's wonderful.

  4. you truely have a way with words molly! beautiful.

  5. Such beautiful words. And! You quoted Donald Miller. Sooo good!

  6. This Florida girl loves your blog....and still hopes someday you'll write a book. I know I'll buy have the gift of words!

  7. I love that Donald Miller quote! Glad you are back to posting! :)

  8. Sometimes I just scratch my head. Maybe that other anonymous has a point? You've been gone for days, come back with someone else's beautiful words, and everyone pets you like you wrote an actual blog post. If you want to write, then do it!

    1. Hey look bitchy bitch is back!

If you don't like this blog find a new one.

      Go away.

    2. Anon - she clearly credited the authors and some people found it to be beautiful. perhaps they hadn't heard it before, so molly sharing the words was something they appreciated. but mostly, molly hasn't posted in awhile, and while they call her a beautiful writer, perhaps they were just missing her posts, or liked the way she described ash wednesday in the first few sentences. you are more than entitled to be befuddled by other people liking something that doesn't strike your fancy, and to encourage molly to write more. we don't always have to "pet" the authors of the blogs we read. but don't be a coward. stand by your opinion by attaching your name to it, like most of us here have done. when you don't do that it seems like you're being mean for the sake of being mean, rather than trying to actually communicate and share a converstion with the author, the kickass molly in this case.

  9. If you don't like the content, then stop reading! People are so rude.

  10. I'd love to read Anonymous' blog. I wonder why she is hiding it from us?

Please Anonymous share with us your amazing literary masterpiece blog, we are all dying to read it.

  11. I’ve missed reading your thoughts my friend. More than anything – specifically, your choice of words or topic, I love and appreciate your perspective and outlook on life. You always find beauty in the small things and make the effort to write about it here to help you remember. I think you are amazing!

  12. Those quotes.... they're beautiful, and ones I've never heard before. Thanks for sharing, Molly.

Are you giving anything up for Lent? I'm trying for no chocolate, but it's proving too hard for me. I ate a mini bag of Cadbury mini-eggs without even realizing it last night. Whoops!

  13. You know what I love most about you and your blog? That you're writing for YOU! About your fabulous life in NYC and even the small things, personal things. Writing is like medicine for your heart. Your inspiration can - and does - inspire others. Roll Tide?! Roll Tide! :)

  14. Don't people realize how busy I am? I can't be taking people DOWNTOWN all the time. I have things to clean!

  15. Good for you! I didn't get my ashes this year. Bad girl. Tell Justin 'Happy B-day" from your bloggy friend, Carolyn. :) Just now seeing the anon stuff. You've got way more lovers and followers on your side!
